Emperors

From Augustus to Constantine, Rome was ruled by 54 emperors, not to mention a host of rivals and rebels who claimed the imperial title, and their successors of the divided empire.

Of the first 12 emperors, only four died peacefully in their beds:  4 were assassinated, 2 committed suicide, and 2 more were most likely murdered, one by poison and one by suffocation.  In the hothouse world of wealth and intrigue the Roman emperors held supreme power, but only at supreme risk.
