Borgund Church - ca 1150

The best preserved and one of the most ornate of the Stave Churches is Borgund.  On the outside, it has dragon heads on the gables and stands more or less as it was when built in 1150.

 

The inside evolved over time.  The apse was most likely not a part of the original construction and the pulpit dates from the last part of the 1500's with the altar piece dating from 1620.

 

Two models of this church exist in the US - Rapid City, South Dakota and Washington Island, Wisconsin.
